Santa Barbara Wedding Photography | Amanda + Neno

Amanda + Neno were one of the cutest, sweetest couples I had the pleasure of photographing this year! These two were high school sweethearts and so this wedding was a long time coming! They chose to have a Santa Barbara destination beach wedding because they just love the scenery here, and who could blame them?! It was so sweet how all their friends and family gathered to be there for them on their special day. Each person in their bridal party even gave a short toast to let the the couple know how great they were together and what great friends they are! It was seriously one of the cutest moments I've ever witnessed at a wedding! The sweetest thing about this wedding though, was of course, just watching Amanda + Neno together! Neno looked like the happiest guy on Earth and Amanda was over joyed as well! I loved documenting their passion for each other! Take a look at the pics below and huge thanks to Kelsey for 2nd shooting!santa barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographersanta barbara wedding photographer

Linda + Ben had a gorgeous backyard Santa Ynez wedding, and I was so thrilled to be there to document it for them! Linda has great style and chose to mix their rustic Santa Ynez ranch venue with a hot pink, black, white and chevron style. It was so unique, vibrant and fun! The florals were perfectly designed by Kellye of Precious Blooming and the day was nicely coordinated by Liz of Central Coast Memory Makers. Montecito Wedding Photography | Sierra + Jason

Sierra & Jason were wed recently in Montecito and I was honored to document their festivities! They had a beautiful ceremony at the stunning & historic Our Lady Mount Carmel cathedral and a gorgeous reception at Montecito Country Club! Sierra looked like a dream in her beautiful Pronovias dress, which had a very unique feathered bodice! And Jason looked so dapper! This wedding was a long time in the making as Sierra & Jason have been friends since elementary school, and sweet hearts for nearly all their lives. You could tell how comfy these two are together and how overjoyed they were to finally be making this official! Their parents were also thrilled to finally officially become one big family. It was beautiful to witness! El Encanto Wedding Photography | Kimberly + Paul

Kimberly + Paul were married at the beautiful El Encanto Resort over Memorial Day Weekend, and I was so honored to document their lovely day! The day was perfectly planned and designed by La Fete Weddings, with gorgeous and modern florals by NLC Productions.  Kimberly and Paul thought through so many details of their day which made the whole wedding so unique and personal. From their wine-box ceremony (where the unopened love letters they wrote to each other on their wedding day were sealed in a wine box to be opened on their 5th anniversary), to the stationery which Paul designed himself, to their music selections at the reception-- it was also so perfectly them. Their friends and family from around the world all gathered in Santa Barbara to celebrate with them-- and what a celebration it was! Delicious food, wild dancing, and hilarious toasts all made for a perfect evening. It was truly one of the really special and memorable weddings where you can just feel that every one was so happy to be there. It was wonderful! Sunstone Winery & Villa Wedding | Tanya & James

What can I say about Tanya + James wedding other than it was simply perfect? The venue, (my favorite) Sunstone Villa is always breathtaking. The decor on this particular event was extra special though! The setting with vineyards in full bloom was beyond picturesque. But more than these things, this wedding was perfect because of the people. Tanya & James are just remarkable. Two of the kindest and most genuine people you could ever hope to meet. And there family & friends were no different! Everyone was happy, relaxed and having the time of their lives which always makes a wedding day perfect. Tanya looked like an absolute dream-- the kind of bride you see in magazines! And James totally knew it. He beamed from ear to ear every time he laid eyes upon her. Really, it was a beyond perfect day. I feel so blessed to have been a part of it and I am soooo very excited to share some of their gorgeous pictures below!Big thanks to Percy Sales Events for planning, designing and executing a perfect day and these other fine vendors as well - The Tent Merchant, Sunstone Winery and Villa, Tamara's Catering, Your Image Floral, Designer Specialty Linens, Decadence Fine Cakes & Confections, Diggem, LBPS Events, Absolutely Fabulous Glamour, Anthony Ybarra Music, Santa Barbara Airbus, Hotel Corque! Palm Springs Wedding | Lauren + Gian

There are some weddings that are just so bittersweet...because I just LOVE the couple so much. I spend a year or more counting down to their big day, and just adore working with them. Their day comes and it's pure magic. And that's where the bitter part of "bittersweet" comes in, because inevitably the wedding comes to an end and then I can't look forward to their wedding anymore. Sigh...Lauren + Gian's Palm Springs wedding was one of these bittersweet ones. I have adored them since our initial meeting, and have been anxiously awaiting there wedding for awhile now! These two are just the type of couple I LOVE to work with-- kind, sweet, madly in love with each other, trusting, stylish, easy going, and just plain fun to hang out with. Their wedding-- which was a Brazilian Carnival-themed Palm Desert fete-- did not disappoint! In fact, it was so great I am mostly sad it's over already! The day was beautifully planned by Natalie Sofer Events. It was held at the bride's parents' beautiful home in La Quinta. The bridal party was super fun. Lauren + Gian looked like a dream and were just beaming with joy all day. They were up for anything as far as photos went-- letting me take them out into the sandy desert for photos after their ceremony! They were just so happy and in love and over-joyed, it was a great energy to be around! The reception was like one giant cocktail party, with Carnival masks and Brazilian food and peacock feathered-decor! It was a perfect day and I was honored to be a part of it!Thanks to Erin for 2nd shooting yet again!

Santa Barbara Glamour Photography | Melanie

Melanie is a beautiful, beautiful person. She is actually my yoga coach and she has helped me grow so much stronger (both physically and emotionally/mentally) in the past 1.5 years. She has profoundly changed my life and helped me move past many of my own fears, insecurities and supported me in going after my dreams in many ways. I could not be more grateful for her presence in my life.Melanie has been so generous to share her gifts with me, so I was really excited to have the opportunity to share my talents with her! It was really cool for me to do this glamour session for her too because I am so used to only seeing her in lululemon clothes, ready to work out! So it was really awesome to see this softer, super girly side to her. I was also super honored that she was generous enough to let me film and share her story in video format. So below please watch the behind the scenes video of her shoot and then check out some of my fave shots from the session!Melanie's Glamour Shoot from Ashleigh Henning on Vimeo.ba1santa barbara beauty glamour photographysanta barbara beauty glamour photographysanta barbara beauty glamour photographysanta barbara beauty glamour photographysanta barbara beauty glamour photographysanta barbara beauty glamour photography

Santa Barbara Newborn Photography | Baby Lawson

I am so very excited to share with you these adorable and precious images from baby Lawson's first photoshoot! This shoot is so special to me for many reasons. But mainly, it's amazing to see one of my early clients (and biggest supporters) grow their family and have a baby. Just three years earlier I shot their engagement session in nearly the same spot.... and now here I am in 2014 photographing their newborn. Wow! Oh life, you are crazy! What a tremendous joy to see Carolyn & Prescott so happy as new parents. What an honor to be asked to photograph this milestone.I have never photographed a newborn before and had been pretty adamant about not wanting to... Why? Well, I am not a fan of overly & unnaturally posed baby photos... something about it freaks me out! So that aspect of newborn photography was never appealing to me. I was also terrified of shooting babies for fear I might break them or something while posing them (since I don't have babies and am an only child I haven't been around babies too much to realize how bendy and resilient they are)! I honestly thought I'd never photograph a newborn... But luckily Carolyn & Prescott insisted I'd be great at it and encouraged me to do this for them! How could I say no to one of my favorite couples of all time?!! Obviously, I did not say no and surprised myself by just how much fun I had!!! Babies are adorable, and photographing baby Lawson was easy peasy (maybe he is just a born model like his parents). And the photos? Well the photos are so tender and heart warming I cannot stop oohing and awwing over them.So who knew? I like photographing babies! Thanks Baby Lawson, Mommy Carolyn and Daddy Prescott for believing in me and choosing me to capture this milestone. I am smitten with you three and what we created together. And even more so I am so proud of you and know you are already the most perfect little family! I cannot wait to document the rest of this momentous year for you!

3 Ways Social Media Is Ruining Your Wedding... And What To Do About It!

3 ways social media is ruining your weddingLove it or hate it, social media is here to stay! And while it can be a great resource and add a lot of fun to your wedding planning process, it can also ruin your big day! Wait what? As a wedding photographer, I have seen it happen. The good news is you don't need to fall victim to the social media induced wedding day blues. Here's three ways social media can really ruin your wedding experience and what to do about it so it does not happen to you!1) FACEBOOKSharing big life moments on facebook has become the status quo. It's easy on a big day like your wedding to want to update your status, check out all your likes, and all the lovely words of congratulations people are writing on your wall! However, I am always amazed by how many brides spend a lot of their time in the hair & make up chair looking at their phone & facebook on their wedding day.The Problem: There are three big problems with this. 1) It makes it much harder for your hair and make up artist to do their job when you are constantly checking your phone for updates. 2) It doesn't really look that great in photos to see a bride engrossed in her phone. It's totally not that idealistic image of a bride looking excited as she's being primped, but rather one where a bride looks concentrated on something else other than her wedding day. 3) The biggest problem of all is that it is actually taking you out of the moment of enjoying what is actually happening. Your wedding day only happens once, but your facebook wall will still be full of messages tomorrow. It's so much better to live in the day rather than the social network because, well, YOLO.The Solution:  Turn your phone off or give it to your MOH so you don't feel tempted to check it. Maybe your friend can even periodically check your fb for you and report back. But you should really do your best not to check it and enjoy the moment!2) PINTERESTPinterest is practically synonymous with wedding planning these days. Most brides have several pinterest boards dedicated to wedding inspiration-- everything from their dream decor to must-have shots they want for their wedding pictures. I do love Pinterest and think when used wisely it can be a great resource, but it also has its pitfalls. The Problem: Pinterest creates a LOT of unrealistic expectations for your wedding day which can lead to a lot of disappointment for brides. Keep in mind this: when you are pinning photos you are pinning one or two of the BEST photos of someone's wedding. So your pinterest board is not actually representative of every shot every person gets in one wedding but rather a "best of" compilation of photos from hundreds of different weddings. And there are a lot of unique factors to each wedding such as location, scheduling/timeline, whether or not a couple did a first look, weather and lighting conditions, etc which may make recreating these "best of" shots hard to accomplish. Each wedding is unique so it is very unrealistic to think your full wedding folio will look like the highlights from many other weddings. That's not to say your photos won't be AMAZING, it's just to say they might not be a shot by shot recreation of your pinboard. Beyond just unrealistic expectations for photos, pinterest can also create unrealistic expectations for what is doable in decor. A lot of stuff that is popular on pinterest is from styled photo shoots-- not even real weddings-- and to execute that look for a real event would cost $$$$.The Solution: I am not saying you need to get rid of your pinterest board, just to keep your expectations in check. Use the boards to figure out the overall style you'd like for your pictures or decor, and then find a vendor who fits that style and can create something ORIGINAL just for you within that style. Your original photos created by a photographer you trust are going to be so much more genuine, beautiful, artistic and meaningful than recreations of shots on your pinboard. And heck, a few of them may even end up being popular on pinterest down the road too ;)For further reading on how Pinterest affects your wedding photos I'd highly recommend reading Troy + Aimee Grover's article "A Photographer's Perspective On Pinterest". They have a similar point of view & go into even more detail on the topic!3) INSTAGRAM (or similar photo sharing apps/sites)Your friends, family and sometimes even your bridal party are whipping their phones out to live instagram your wedding day! That might seem great in theory, as you are excited to see some photos from your day right away, but there is a real trade off for this. The Problem: First, by live instagramming the day, your friends and family are not being in the moment with you. I've actually had to ask bridesmaids to stop taking photos of the bride getting into her dress so she could actually be in the photo with the bride and be a part of the getting ready process. Really?! Yes, really. I've seen moms so focused on getting a photo of the bride walking down the aisle with their phone, that their face registered no actual emotion as to what was going on other than the concentrated look of "must take this photo."  It is really so sad, especially since part of the reason you hire a professional photographer like me is so you don't have to get the shots yourself and can enjoy the moment of the day! Second, it actually ruins your pro-photos when you have a bunch of people trying to take amateur pictures. It can be as simple as looking at your ceremony photos and seeing a sea of hands holding iphones where your guests' heads should be. But it can be much worse too. I've had guests get up and stand in the aisle to take pictures during a ceremony blocking or limiting my shots. I've even had a guest during the cake cutting ask me if I could move out of their shot... but I am pretty sure at the end of the day the bride preferred my pro-shot to her guest's blurry instagram one. ;)The Solution: Have an "unplugged" wedding or at the very least an unplugged ceremony. This means asking guests to put away their phones & cameras and not take pictures during the ceremony (or sometimes the entire wedding). You can do this really nicely by putting up a cute sign, a note in the program and/or by having the officiant say something about it prior to the start of the ceremony. I've had several couples do this and it has had a tremendously positive impact on both the photos and the whole mood of the day!In conclusion, I think the common thread here is that all three social media outlets (Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram) detract from your wedding day because in one way or another they take you out of enjoying the moment of your day. Whether it is referring back to your pinterest board to make sure all your "must have shots" got taken, or checking your facebook feed for messages from friends, or your guests jumping up with their phones to take tons of pictures during your ceremony instead of actually watching it, all of these things prevent you from fully experiencing one of the huge milestones of your life. Your wedding day will go fast. Enjoy it fully.
