How Thinking Like A Photographer Will Change Your Life (and personal photos) Forever!

I know I may seem biased being that I am a professional photographer... but having beautiful photos can change your life. And I am not just talking about hiring a professional for family portraits, I am talking about the photos you take every day of your kids and loved ones.If you are a mom like me you know time moves by WAY TOO FAST. That teensy tiny smushy baby is now a toddler. And then that toddler will soon be off to kindergarten. Then you blink and boom-- you are dropping your baby off at college. There are so many big and little milestones over the course of your kids lives. And if I am being real, it’s probably impossible to hire a pro like me for ALL those little moments. For most families even being able to afford one professional portrait sitting a year is a big expense. So what’s a mom to do in those in betweens?Well with digital cameras being everywhere, including in your purse, you are probably documenting your kids yourself. As a mom you are the keeper of memories. But how well are you keeping your memories? If you are tired of missing moments because:-they are blurry-too bright-too dark-getting not so cute expressions-having photos that look a mess (though you don’t quite know why)… then I am here to help! Let me walk you through 5 simple ways you can change your photos for the better (even on an iPhone)-- and more importantly change your life simply by documenting it beautifully.

1)Let There Be (Good) Light

t5dc-3Photography is literally the art of capturing light. So it makes sense getting your photos to have better light in them would be a game changer for you. Here’s some things that you really need to know to see massive results--Avoid taking photos outside in direct + bright sun. - Professional portrait photographers avoid taking photos outdoors anytime between 10am -2:30pm or so (depending where you live) because this is literally such an unflattering type of light. Plus your kids will look squinty and not relaxed. I know as a mom sometimes this is exactly when we are out at the park with our kids and the moments are happening. One work around is to either find some shade OR take a wider shot-- if your kids are small in the frame the harsh light is less noticeable and so are their expressions.--Turn Off That Flash. A built in camera flash has to be one of the most unflattering types of light ever invented. And yet, if I had a dollar for everytime I saw someone using their flash--when it wasn’t even necessary-- I’d have my son’s college completely paid for! Do yourself a favor and turn your flash off. Your photos will thank you! --Open the Curtains. If you are shooting indoors you want to use all the natural light that is available to you and turn off your indoor lights. So open those curtains and blinds. Make your room bright as can be. Face your kiddo towards the light too so it’s actually hitting her face! It makes such a difference!

2) Burst Mode is for Movers

_MG_6705It can be so hard to capture fast moving toddlers and kids. Lately it seems like my son can simply not sit still for a photo. And though that annoys me, I still know how to nail the shot because I know how to work my camera. A DSLR has a few settings you can use to keep those wiggly kiddos in focus. But you can also simply use your iphone to do a better job (if you don’t have a DSLR). Do you know about iPhone’s burst mode? It allows you snap many pictures at one time. The thought being if you take 15 pictures at a time at least one will turn out good. ;) It’s so simple to use. Open the iPhone camera app (do not use a third party app). Instead of simply tapping the circle button to take a photo press and HOLD IT DOWN. It will keep shooting for as long as you hold. Soon after, I recommend going through the frames of your burst and choosing 1-3 of the best ones in the set and DELETE the others. That way you won’t be confused by the bad ones or fill up your phone.

3) Move B, Get Out My Background

tcostume-10One thing that nearly all professional portraits have is a subtle, soft, non distracting background. This allows you to focus on the person-- your kid-- in the photo rather than having your eye jump around the frame and get distracted. A tool photographers employ on DSLRs to do this is opening their lens up really wide to create a blurry background. But even if you don’t have a DSLR, you can still think like a photographer. As you are about to snap a picture, PAY ATTENTION to what’s going on in the background. -Are poles or tree branches “growing” from your kids’ head?-What about other people? Are they pulling focus in the background?-Any other eyesores in the frame? By paying attention to what’s behind your child, you can frame your photo better. Often you can simply move an inch or two to the left or right or up or down and you can eliminate those distractions from the frame. You may also decide to get in closer to eliminate distractions too.

4) Fill Your Frame

t5dc-4This lesson kind of plays off of the previous tip regarding watching for distractions. In that lesson I just mentioned you can “get closer in” to your subject to also help avoid distractions. And while “zooming in” on your kiddos does help crop eye sores out of the background, that’s not the only reason to do it. In portraiture, professional photographers often fill their frame with just their subjects face. It is such a powerful way to really see someone and is more eye catching than a whole full body shot. You can fill the frame with details too-- like little hands or feet. It’s always very powerful. To do this, especially on a phone camera, I recommend using your legs to help you zoom rather than the “zoom feature” on your camera. You see unless you have a proper zoom lens, which the iphone does NOT, you are actually just cropping into the photo and degrading your photo quality when you use the camera to zoom. How do you zoom with your legs? It’s quite simple. Just walk in closer to your kiddo. Get up in there. Find some cool angles! That is what pros like me do!

5) Laugh Together, Make Memories Together

_MG_7289The best photographers are the ones that really have FUN behind the camera and make the client forget they are being photographed. I believe a client should always leave a shoot saying “Thank you! That was really a lot of fun!” You are a mom, not photographing a client. But still… Why should photographing your kids be any different. They will want to be photographed if you are having fun and engaging with them while doing so. Photo time should never be a chore. Be super silly. Fake laugh till you real laugh. Go to cool and fun locations. Make a dork of yourself. Involve your kids in the whole process. Act like a pro photographer in this simple way and you will find yourself not only achieving pro results, but you will also be making brand new amazing memories while capturing your kids! I just threw a lot of info at you! And I know it’s good stuff. But sometimes when learning a new skill and art form it’s nice to have someone hold your hand and personally walk you through everything you need to know!

I’m actually doing exactly that in my FREE  photo class which will have you capturing beautiful memories of your kiddos in just five days!

Updating Our Brand

2015 was a year of a lot of soul searching... which given that I had a baby last year, it makes total sense that I wanted to evaluate all aspects of my life. I came to some conclusions about the direction of my business and brand, what I wanted to be doing with my time, and what I did not. I attended another live workshop by my hero Sue Bryce and wrote some major, scary, but exciting decisions on paper... And this year, 2016, has been making them all come to life!!So I am being very cryptic but letting you know that the "Ashleigh Taylor" brand is being updated and the big unveiling is Monday! Yes, like as in 48 hours from now. I can't wait to show you what I am working on and share our new changes to the business with you. OUR NEW LOOK & A Feature on JunebugWeddings.com

Whoa guys! Whoa! It's been a whirlwind of a week on a personal & professional note! The personal note is not as good as my hubby is really sick with the chicken pox (no, he never got them as a kid or got the vaccine). But the professional note is really exciting stuff & I am excited to take a break and  share it  with y'all, in between playing nurse to my sick hubby!

Our NEW Look!

For a long time now I've wanted a new look. The direction of my brand, images, style and vision for Ashleigh Taylor Photography has changed so much since in the last 4 years, and I really felt I needed a new logo & web design to support it!Upon recommendation of peers, I decided to sign up for a workshop called GoLive where web-designer extraordinaire Promise Tangeman and her amazing crew of co-designers teach & help you create a new website & launch in 2 days flat! It was a stressful & whirlwind experience which at moments left me feeling like I wish I had just straight up hired a designer to do 100% of the work, but at the end of the day I did learn quite a bit AND I walked away with the shiny, new, gorgeous website I was envisioning in just two days!Meg Long who was one of the designers I worked very closely with at the workshop also designed my brand new logo which I am super stoked about!!!All in all, it  was a very collaborative process and I am so excited to share the new results with you!!!  Both the boudoir/glamour AND the wedding website got a shiny new make over. Check them out, explore and tell me what you think!!SPLASH PAGE:Screen shot 2013-11-01 at 5.16.42 PMWEDDING SITE: Screen shot 2013-11-01 at 5.16.27 PMBOUDOIR + GLAMOURScreen shot 2013-11-01 at 5.17.00 PM

Our Grand Opening Party!

Sunday was our official Grand Opening party for our new studio space in Downtown Santa Barbara! You're Invited to our Grand Opening Party!

So much BIG STUFF has happened since I moved to Santa Barbara in December 2011. But this year has been bigger than my wildest dreams! Amongst a crazy busy/good wedding season, I watched my boudoir and glamour photography just blossom. Truth be told there is no one doing boudoir and glam the way I do boudoir/glam here in Santa Barbara... or Ventura or SLO as a matter of fact! The feedback from clients and the community has been incredible. Pretty much every inquiry I received starts with "I want to do a shoot with you because your work is amazing and the best I've seen"... It's humbling beyond words. And is also a dream come true. Because while I love shooting weddings, I equally love to photograph women. To help them to feel beautiful. confident and amazing in their own skin. To show women just how beautiful they can be.So my make up artist friend Page of Absolutely Fabulous and I secured a fabulous studio space in downtown Santa Barbara. It is a space dedicated to all things feminine-- hair, make up , beauty, boudoir, glam, photography, girl power. We are super excited to be opening this space to better serve the women of Santa Barbara, Ventura and beyond! And THIS SUNDAY. We are having a Grand Opening Party! I'm very excited to announce that I've FINALLY started a mailing list for all things Ashleigh Taylor Photography! Book Your Holiday Mini Sessions!

It's here! That special time of year where boots come out to play on our feet, pumpkin spice lattes warm our hands, and we get into the holiday spirit! Well, admittedly it has been a bit hard to do that here in SoCal because the weather has been CRAZY HOT! But, the fact of the matter is, it is October, people! And we need to start preparing for the holidays!Autumn is the one time of year I set aside to do family and group sessions-- in addition to couples. As y'all know I specialize in weddings and boudoir and the two areas keep me very busy most of the year! But I love to get a chance to work with my former clients and their (growing) families, as well as the families of my clients' friends! It's a nice little time to catch up with everyone and continue to document your lives! My mini sessions are a great value! And, better yet, mini sessions provide that perfect Holiday card portrait that everyone is in need of this time of year!So yep, it is that time! This year I will be holding Mini Sessions in SANTA BARBARA, CA on November 4th and 11th (both Sundays). One day the shoot will be downtown SB and one day it will be a beach setting! Want more info? Check out the flyer below and CALL US 323. 207.6754 or email info@ashleightaylorphotography.com

Unveiling Our New Home!!!

I am SO excited to finally share pics of my new home! The decorating process as been a long one! And one I could NOT have done without the help of my talented friend Rachel, and her mother Robin, the fabulous designers of Madison Modern Home ...and also the help of my in-laws!I hired Rachel and her mom to design and style my living room/dining room and home office. I knew I wanted to be really involved in the process and DIY a bunch of stuff, but at the same time I needed guidance and some help reigning in my ideas! Rachel did just that! She looked at my pinterest and evaluated my space and helped pull together a moodboard for me, complete with paint colors and items to buy/diy! Then the hard labor came in... me + my in-laws took on a bunch of projects from painting the walls and cabinets, to switching out light fixtures, DIYing a linear chandelier, repainting some furniture, sewing new slipcovers for our tired dining chairs (that was all my mother-in-law), DIYing new closet doors, and DIYing Chevron curtains (more on that later)! The shopping was clearly the easy part! ;) But honestly, it felt so good to put in the work to our home. It really makes it your own when you put your sweat in it! ;)With our projects and shopping complete, it was time for Rachel and Robin to come back to our place and style/decorate everything! This is the part that amazes me! It's all about the little details and the arranging of pieces. I am working on getting better at styling but honestly it can be frustrating for me. I am a person who seems to create clutter wherever I go in my home, so to really step back, streamline and rearrange is a challenge! I was VERY thankful to be able to leave the finishing touches to the experts! The other great thing is that Rachel was able to take a lot of the antique and vintage pieces that I inherited from my grandparents and put them throughout our home. It is because of my grandparents that we had the down payment for the home, for which I will always be so thankful. It feels very special to have their cherished antiques and decorative items in our own home. I know my grandma would love it!Having a home I could be proud of has been a LONG time coming. It is literally a dream come true. I have always envied other photographers who met clients in their homes, and were able to show their clients beautiful  walls of canvas and print displays. I wished, hoped, and prayed that one day I could have a space that not only I'd be proud to show clients, but that my clients would find comfy, helpful and educational! I am excited to begin taking meetings in my home, and thankful I have a comfy, cozy, stylish atmosphere to really show my potential clients who I am and what I have to offer them. Having a office with a gallery wall allows me to show clients the different print options, and exactly why having your pictures live beyond the digital realm is so important! So... that was a long fancy way of explaining that from now forth all client meetings will take place in my home/home studio in Santa Barbara, CA!And now without further ado..PICTURES!I LOVE the plate wall, which mixes plates my grandparents had collected from around the world with a few vintage pieces that Rachel brought! :) Oh, and that is also my grandparents antique banjo barometer! There are no words to describe how in love I am with my DIY crystal chandelier and DIY chevron curtains! On the left - our adorable sitting area with painted side table! And on the right - a detail of our bookshelves, which are from Ikea. Rachel added a faux bois wallpaper backing to give them a little more personality and add a masculine touch to the room!I am obsessed with our chair (the Cute as a Button Erin from World Market) and the chevron pillow made by Little House Frau. Rachel added an organic touch with this real bird's nest and decorative eggs inside this glass dome!LOVE this vignette on the coffee table (which is from World Market by the way). The living room!Without a doubt my favorite area of the room is my silhouette wall! My grandma had silhouettes of herself, my dad and me as a kid. I love the family tradition. I added to it by ordering some from Esty, and had one made of me, AJ and our 2 cats! It's a little family tree. Hopefully we can add to this wall some day! I also adore the lamp which is from Urban Home...and the decanter, which is vintage Baccarat, inherited from my grandparents. The antique desk and chair were also from my grandparents...antique finds which they brought home from a trip to England! The table and chair are so meaningful to me because I remember it being in their home and the stories they'd tell me about bringing it back from London. My mother-in-law recovered the cushion though since the old fabric was worn out. Voila, so antique and so modern all at once!Cute vignettes...The living room couch and pillows on the couch are courtesy of my favorite store EVER... West Elm! The throws are from Ikea. And now for my home studio!!!!! I adore the gallery wall of my work... a nice mix of matted + framed prints and canvas gallery wraps! The desk is from Target, the chair is Ikea and the lamp is an antique (again, from my grandparents)!I LOVE this little window bench... but my cats love it even more! The curtains are West Elm!We DIY'd those closet doors (more on that in another post) and the other wall houses all my work stuff! The best thing is that there is enough room in here to set up a back drop for shoots if need be! It truly is my mini home studio!I totally underestimated how inspiring it is to work surrounded by my favorite photos and magazine features! It pushes me to take it to the next level!Voila! My home! We still need to decorate the master bedroom, the guest bath and the third bedroom, but this is quite the start! I can't wait for you to come see it! :)Credits:Design - Madison Modern Home http://madisonmodernhome.com/Furniture and Accessories - Ikea, West Elm, World Market, Urban Home, Target, Pampa, Little House FrauSilhouettes - Aeryck De SadePaint Colors: Dunn Edwards: "Foil" (gray for living room), "Citron" (accent wall in living room), "Prime Pink" (home studio)Everything Else - DIY'd by me or Antique/Vintage

Ch-ch-changes + Out Of The Office

I know its been a little **crickets** on the blog lately! I haven't forgotten about my dear readers! I've just been a little overwhelmed...You see my husband and I are moving to Santa Barbara! Santa Barbara, you ask! Why? What? How? Don't you LOVE LA??Let me explain. Yes, I LOVE LA. I love it like it is my family. But I do actually love my husband more. And as it turns out, this year my husband (who is a Santa Barbara native) got his dream job. The dream job he told me about just a few weeks after we began dating 7 years ago. Yep, and it's in Santa Barbara. Womp womp womp. But... Santa Barbara is a LOVELY place! So I am very lucky actually :)We also... BOUGHT A CONDO THERE! Yep! A lovely 3 bedroom condo! Of our very own! This is our first time being home owners so we are thrilled! :)You may be wondering how the move will affect my clients. And really, once we get settled in it won't change a thing! I will still be shooting weddings and engagements in LA, in addition to working in SB.Very exciting stuff!:)But... It's also a little cray-cray stressful. We get our keys today and move this weekend. Then it's practically Christmas + Hanukkah (we celebrate both) and then I leave to visit my dad in Texas for 8 days.I want to let you know that I will not be in the office from today, Friday 12/16 until Tuesday 1/3/12. I will still try to reply to emails, but they may be returned  much slower than usual. Additionally, I will not be editing images, scheduling shoots, mailing out discs/canvases/albums during this time. All such work will resume on January 3rd.Thanks so much for your patience! I wish everyone Happy Holidays! And please stay tuned on the blog as I have scheduled some posts to entertain y'all in the interim!xo,Ashleigh

Out Of The Office

Well folks, it's time. Time for me to leave for my last wedding of the 2011 season! And it's gonna be a doozy! An 11-11-11 wedding in New Hampshire! All emails will be returned at that time. Thanks so much for your patience while I am away from the office!!!!!!xoxoAshleigh

Out Of The Office

Well, I'm headin' out of the office...I'M GOING TO CATALINA!!! Woohoo! I love Catalina Island! It's one of my favorite places :) It's a short trip-- just two days! I will be back on Thursday. But I'm not bringing my laptop with me so I won't be checking email. All emails sent while I'm away will be returned Thursday! Thanks!!! :)

Out Of The Office

I will be out of the office today, 6/21 through 6/28... because ... I WILL BE IN HAWAII!! The Henning Family is going on vacation to celebrate my in-laws 35th wedding anniversary, myself and my husband's 2nd wedding anniversary, my mother in law's birthday, and my husband's 30th birthday! Woohoo! We have lots to celebrate. I will not be returning emails until 6/29. If you have an emergency please call me!Also...regarding Tuesday Top 5... I've decided to discontinue that. Tears, I know! But Tuesdays are a hard day for me to blog workflow wise, plus I was only talking about food anyways. LOL! So Tuesday Top 5 will now become two separate weekly blog features-- Foodie Fridays (hooray!) and random posts entitled Material Girl in which I'll talk about all the material things I love! So that's the story there!!Okay....HAWAII TIME!!! Aloha and Mahalo!
